About Me:
My name is Iyaz Akhtar. I am a graduate of Vermont Law School. I started enjoying computers by happenstance. A long time ago, my brother bought a Simpsons video game. This game did not work with any console system we had. My brother asked my dad if we could buy a computer. My dad said yes. We went to Radio Shack and bought a Tandy computer. It could play that Simpsons game my brother bought.
Eventually, we went back to Radio Shack and bought a Tandy Sensation. It was a “Multimedia Computer” complete with CD-ROM drive. I messed up the system and ended up in “Program Manger.” Little did I know I had ended up in Windows 3.1′s Program Manger. I could not get the Tandy’s front-end to work. I was stuck in Program Manager. It was there that I started playing with Windows.
After 3.1 and a bunch of PC World and PC Magazines later, I was anticipating Windows 95. I convinced my dad to take me to Staples at midnight to pick up Windows 95. I installed Windows 95 on whatever machine that would allow such a thing. My very old Tandy laptop had 95 on it. My AST laptop bought at Sam’s Club had 95 on it.
With Windows (and Prodigy) I had discovered the “Internet.” I was astonished that you could send an e-mail to Arizona (in the US) for FREE and it would be delivered instantaneously. This interweb thing was nifty.
Around 2005, after 11 years of Windows usage, I switched to the Mac. I found it more stable and enjoyed the lack of spyware, adware and viruses on the platform. It already had the clean interface that I enjoyed on Windows after customizing it some. OS X also had some of the “lifestyle” software that I ended up using. iMovie was a great find since Windows Movie Maker was a joke.
However, I’m not a Mac apologist. I hadn’t bought a Mac until 2005. I thought they were overpriced and underpowered. OS X changed a lot of things. I still think that OS 9 is terrible and XP is very, very good. I had been using a Titanium PowerBook G4 (circa 2001) in 2004. I experimented by bringing it to class with NeoOffice. However, NeoOffice could not replace Microsoft Office. I got MS Office from my school for $20. It turned out Mac OS X was more stable than XP – plus there were no viruses, spyware or adware.
That’s why I switched. I do believe I paid too much for my MacBook Pro – but I knew that when I bought it.
This Site:
On this site, you’re going to get my opinions on technology. I became tech-obsessed around 1994 – when I heard about Windows 95. I would read magazines to find out what was coming out next. The internet changed everything. Today, I check about 20 sites every day, regularly. I look at technology and see what’s going on. I try to stay away from evangelical tangents (unlike the MacCast – a podcast I listen to regularly).
What to Expect from This Site:
This site is my opinions on technology. I read other websites and then opine on the information I read.
What’s this site like compared to others?:
I’m officially a lawyer now; this should give me a different outlook than others when reviewing tech news. While I enjoy discussing standard tech news – law-related tech news is rather intriguing and I will offer my opinion on those matters as well as my standard tech ramblings.
I hope you enjoy my site. I’ll gladly listen to feedback. Thank you.
